The speakeasy’s neon hum dies as the jukebox
skips. Clara’s voice cracks midnote, her hand
trembling. A man in a tailored suit slams a
silver briefcase on the bar. Inside: a map of
the sky, etched with constellations that shift
when touched.
She’d sold her voice for bootleg gin, but this?
The briefcase glows faintly. A whisper in her
ear—“You’re not human.” She stumbles out into
the alley, where a black car idles. The driver’s
eyes are too wide, his skin too smooth. He
offers her a seat.
The car takes her to a rooftop under a moon that
pulses like a heartbeat. A woman in a red dress
stands over a control panel. “You’re the key,”
she says. “The heist starts at midnight.”
Clara’s pulse syncs with the panel’s rhythm.
A gunshot rings out. The car explodes. Clara
rolls, landing in a pile of newspapers. The sky
splits open—a rift above the city, leaking blue
light. The billionaire’s men chase her through
the streets, their guns firing blanks. She ducks
into a subway tunnel, where a crowd of aliens in
human suits sings a lullaby in a language she
understands.
At midnight, the rift opens fully. Clara climbs
a ladder to the rooftop, her lungs burning. The
alien woman grins, holding a crystal. “Take it.
You’ll never be safe here.” The billionaire’s
helicopter descends, its lights blinding. Clara
jumps, the crystal burning her palm.
The world shifts. The city is gone. She stands
in a field of stars, the crystal now a compass
pointing home. The rift closes behind her. The
billionaire’s voice echoes in her head: “You’ll
always be mine.”
Clara laughs, the sound swallowed by the void.
She walks forward, the stars aligning in her
wake.
